A Brief Introduction to my Style of Food Writing

It’s important to me to emphasize foods and places of marginalized people. When, in 2024, with technology soaring, making it easier than ever to connect with anyone anywhere, we are unraveling the work that was necessary for the marginalized to live in a just world. Ending policies like Affirmative Action, taking away Women’s Rights to abortion, banning books on racism… What’s next? Taking back my right to vote because some political group realized it was better when we kept women quiet and in the home?

There’s a phrase we say in the restaurant business to calm each other down when service gets stressful. “It’s just food.” That may be true in the scope of, “It’s not open heart surgery,” but for the sake of equality, respect and understanding food is the only thing that has the ability to unite us all.

About me

Hi, I’m Sarah, a freelance food and travel writer, social media manager and serial newsletter producer based in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi. I was born in San Diego, but spent most of my life living and working as a chef in San Francisco. I am the daughter of a teacher and a bartender, both talented musicians. You can find my work in publications such as Forbes.com, HONOLULU Magazine, FLUX Hawaiʻi, hana hou! and many more. I also manage Instagram for natuRe Waikīkī and  Slow Food O’ahu. I’ve worked almost every position in the hospitality business, front, back, and freelance. I was a chef de cuisine by age 28, a business owner by 30 and a published writer by 37. I also hosted the podcast, Yoga Unplugged Conversations and created the Year of Ingredients. Firm believer in meditation, yoga and stoicism. Love to swim. Old Fashioneds, gin on the rock and funky natural wine, sometimes. Good coffee, The New York Times and Haruki Murakami novels, always.
